Celebrating Pride Month: Embracing Diversity and Inclusion in the Fight Against Hunger

At Feeding Northeast Florida, we believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious food and
support, regardless of their background, identity, or orientation. As Pride Month comes to a
close, we want to take a moment to celebrate and honor the LGBTQ+ community. We
recognize the resilience, strength, and invaluable contributions of LGBTQ+ and want to
highlight the importance of inclusivity in our mission to end hunger.

More than 22% of LGBTQ+ adults live in poverty and are disproportionately affected by food
insecurity. This fact makes this community twice as likely as others to face hunger. SNAP, or the
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is a federal initiative designed to help food
insecure individuals put food on the table. As of November 2022, nearly 42 million people were
enrolled in the program. LGBTQ+ people may make up a large percentage of those receiving
this assistance. According to the Center for American Progress, LGBTQ+ individuals receive
SNAP benefits at twice the rate of non-LGBTQ+ people.

At Feeding Northeast Florida we are proud to stand as allies to the LGBTQ+ community. We
recognize that true progress in the fight against hunger can only be achieved through inclusivity
and a commitment to equality. As we continue to work towards a hunger-free world, we pledge
to listen, learn, and take action to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their sexual
orientation or gender identity, have access to the resources they need to thrive. Together, let
us build a future where everyone can live with dignity and embrace their true selves, free from
the burden of food insecurity. Happy Pride Month!
